Starting with the construction of the HERA project the usage of industrial control components was seriously taken into account for the controls of several subcomponents of the machine. Limited manpower for new developments and the necessity of reliable controls for the cryogenic system led to the decision to buy the first major industrial control system at DESY. Following the same arguments industrial control components are now in operation in several places. This paper will describe the experience with the implementation and operation of the installed equipment. Special focus will be given to the operation of the cryogenic system in conjunction with an external contractor, the integration of new industrial control systems - specially the water supply for HERA - and the field busses in use. Finally an overview of potential candidates for industrial controls and system integration will be given.
