Abstract : 
We investigate the mathematical structure of single-variable quantities
in QCD to two- and three-loop order. Due to the inherent Mellin
structure of these quantities it is shown how a priori very complex
structures can be expressed in terms of  multiple harmonic sums. The
latter quantities obey algebraic relations wich fully derive from their
index pattern independently of their value. Considerable simplification
is obtained by using this algebra which allows to trace back the two--
and three--loop quantities to only a rather low number of functions. We
apply this method to study scaling violations of structure functions.
