Abstract : 
The CMS collaboration is defining its distributed computing environment
in view of the start-up of the LHC collider in 2007. Currently CMS is
perform ing large-scale data productions, in which physics events are
generated and their manifestations in the CMS detector are simulated.
Simulated data are then reconstructed and analyzed by the physicists.
Distribution of tasks and data among the different CMS computing centers
is a crucial aspect of this activity. In this work we present the
prototypes of CMS grid-enabled production and analysis systems developed
in 2003 and the plans for the data challenge which is foreseen in 2004
(DC04). DC04 will test the ability of the CMS computing environment to
reconstruct, distribute and analyze CMS data at a rate which is the 5%
of the full LHC size and will be performed on the infrastructure
provided by the CERN LHC Computing Grid Project.
