The ICALEPCS'97, International Conference on Accelerator and Large Experimental Physics Control Systems, will be held in Beijing, People's Republic of China, from November 3 to 7,1997. It is the 6th of a sequence of conferences that are held every two years successively in Europe, America and Asia. The Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences hosts the 1997 conference.
As usual, the ICALEPCS'97 covers the field of control of particle accelerators, particle detectors, telescopes and nuclear fusion devices. Both hardware and software aspects of control system are considered.
This conference however has a specific emphasis on engineering aspects. Indeed, pressed by reduction of resources, laboratories now seek to collaborate more closely together on common designs, to construct control systems with off-the-shelf and inexpensive industrial products, and to look out for upcoming technologies that may render their controls more economical and more efficient. This leads to a different approach in designing systems, different from the current working habits in these laboratories, with a strong emphasis on engineering aspects: for defining the requirements that the systems must satisfy, for defining architectures integrating "foreign" components, or to keep control on developments that are now often performed outside the laboratories.
During this Conference the EPCS Prize for young outstanding experimental physics control engineers will be awarded for the first time.
As a sponsor of EPS-EPCS, the Hewlett-Packard Company has provided financial support to ICALEPCS'97 : installing the computers in BIH for the duration of the conference and offering the banquet. The Organizing Committee wishes to express its sincere thanks to the Hewlett-Packard Company.

2. Oral and Poster Presentations
A large number of abstracts has been submitted as proposed contributions to this conference, this was highly appreciated by the Program Committee and the session chairpersons. The International Scientific Advisory Committee, the Session Chairpersons and the Program Committee strongly recommended that the contributed papers be accepted as oral presentation if they fall within the focus of ICALEPCS'97. The attached table shows the conference schedule and sessions.
The presentations have been organized into invited papers, oral and poster papers. The time allowed for each oral presentation has been communicated to the corresponding author. Each poster is arranged on a 2.0m high by 1.2m wide board panel. Authors may begin mounting their posters half an hour before the arranged session and mount the poster on the board matching the post number assigned to the poster in the list of Scientific program (see the booklet that will be available at the ICALEPCS'97 registration desk). It is encouraged that the authors stand in front of his / her panel to present their papers .
