The 2nd Asian Winter School on String Theory

15 Jan (Tue) - 25 Jan (Fri), 2008
Kusatsu, Tochigi, Japan

Dear Colleagues,

We are happy to announce the 2nd Asian Winter School on String Theory which will take place at Kusatsu, a historic hot spring town and a ski resort, Japan from Jan. 15 (Tue) , 2008 until Jan.25 (Fri), 2008.

String theory possesses the remarkable property of duality through which short and long distance physics are intimately related. It could bridge the gap between particle physics and cosmology by elucidating the dark side of the universe. Duality also plays an important role to understand strongly coupled gauge theory. We thus believe it is appropriate to host the Asian Winter School, a pan-Asian collaborative effort of Korea, India, China and Japan as the 2nd Asian School of Particles, Strings and Cosmology of the Graduate University for Advanced Studies (Sokendai).

Lectures will be given on (a) Black holes (b) Flux compactification (c) String cosmology as well as non-perturbative aspects of gauge theory and string theory: (d) AdS/CFT, (e) Integrability, (f) String field theory and matrix models. These lectures are accompanied by discussion sessions which aim to foster each student's understandings of the subjects. We also organize seminars including of experimental nature which are informative to students.

Lecturers:

N. Ishibashi (Tsukuba) S. Minwalla (Tata Institute ) G. Shiu (Wisconsin) M. Staudacher (Max Planck Institute) A. Strominger (Harvard) S. Trivedi (Tata Institute)

The decision of travel support and admission to the school will be made shortly after the deadline and it will be notified to the applicants. The participants without the support on the local expense need to pay their lodging/meal at Kusatsu(10 nights), which costs less than $100/night.

Participants are asked to arrive on KEK by the evening of Jan 14, 2007. In the morning of Jan 15, there will be a bus from KEK to Kusatsu. Kusatsu is a historic hot spring town resort, 100 miles north-west of Tokyo. The bus will take you to KEK again on Jan 25th. The participants can stay at KEK lodgings on 14th and 25th. The staying expenses at KEK and the bus transportations between KEK and Kusatsu will not be charged to the participants. The detail of the program, the transportation to KEK will be available on our web pages http://www-conf.kek.jp/nasulec/ shortly. Please check whether or not you need a visa to enter Japan or not.
