The 6th Asian Winter School on Strings, Particles and Cosmology

10 Jan (Tue) - 20 Jan (Fri), 2012
Kusatsu, Gunma, Japan

Dear Colleagues,

We are happy to announce the 6th Asian Winter School on Strings, Particles and Cosmology which will take place at Kusatsu, a historic hot spring town and a ski resort, Japan from Jan. 10 (Tue) until Jan.20 (Fri), 2012.
We have been organizing Asian Winter School on string theory and related subjects for the last 5 years. This school, a joint effort of 4 Asian countries: Korea, India, China and Japan, has grown into a well recognized annual event in Asian. The 6th school is jointly organized by IPMU and Sokendai/KEK.

String theory aims to achieve a consistent and unified understanding of the gauge theory and gravity which are the basis of our understanding of particle physics and cosmology. It is the leading candidate for the ultimate unified theory of forces and matter. It has achieved a remarkable success to microscopically account for a certain class of the black hole entropy. The duality between gauge theory and gravity (AdS/CFT) has been very actively investigated recently, leading to applications to wider branches of physics. It is hoped that string theory may explain the origin and evolution of the universe. It has been indeed the case that cosmology poses very fundamental questions to string theory. We also note recent remarkable progress in our understanding of non-perturbative aspects of SUSY gauge theories and matrix models.

Lectures will be given on (a) Black holes (b) AdS/CFT and applications (c) String cosmology (d) String phenomenology (e) Topological strings (f) SUSY gauge theories and duality. These lectures are accompanied by discussion session to foster each student's understandings of the subjects.
We also organize seminars of experimental/observational nature on LHC/Neutrino/CMB/Gravitational wave/Quark-gluon plasma. These experiments and observations are likely to be very relevant to our fundamental quest.

Lecturers:

How to apply

A number of PhD students and PD fellows from inside/outside of Japan can be supported for staying expenses, and we encourage their applications.

If you are interested in attending this school, send

(1) an application form attached to this notice

and (if you are a graduate student or postdoc)

(2) a recommendation letter from your adviser.

These must be sent no later than Oct 21, 2011 to a-school#ml.post.kek.jp (replace # with @).

The decision of financial support and admission to the school will be made shortly after the deadline and it will be notified to the applicants.
The participants without the support on the local expense need to pay their lodging/meal at Kusatsu(10 nights), which costs about $125/night.

Participants from abroad are asked to arrive on KEK or IPMU by the evening of Jan 9, 2012. In the morning of Jan 10, there will be a bus from KEK/IPMU to Kusatsu for foreign participants and those from IPMU/KEK. The most of the domestic participants are expected to gather at the school site hotel.
Kusatsu is a historic hot spring town resort, 100 miles north-west of Tokyo. The return bus to KEK/IPMU will be arranged on Jan 20th.
The participants can stay at KEK lodgings or hotels near IPMU on 9th and 20th. The detail of the program, the transportation to KEK/IPMU will be available on our web pages http://www-conf.kek.jp/nasulec/ shortly. Please check whether or not you need a visa to enter Japan or not. Ask your nearest Japanese diplomatic mission.
